Four Tips to Keep Winter Colic at Bay

Winter can bring gut troubles for horses, but don’t worry! Here are four simple ways to avoid colic and keep your horse happy and healthy through the last few weeks of winter!

1.Keep Them Hydrated!

Horses often drink less water in winter, leading to impaction colic. Frozen water buckets/bins are the main culprits!

Make sure to check water daily. Water bins can often split and crack in freezing temperatures, our stacking water bins are crack resistant and will last a lifetime saving you a headache during winter!

Warm water is a hit in winter! Horses drink more when the water is warm, so consider using a kettle to heat up a water bin. Mixing warm water with feed to create a mash is also a tasty way to boost hydration.

2. Let Them Roam!

Horses need space to move. Staying in a stable all day can increase the chances of colic.

Turn them out as much as possible! If it’s too cold, a good blanket or a run-in shelter will keep them cosy in winter.

Spread out hay and place water far from the gate to encourage movement. If you can’t turn them out, some time spent in an indoor arena is better than being stuck in a stable.

3. Feed Plenty of Forage!

In winter, hay replaces grass in their diet. But dry hay can contribute to colic.

Instead of increasing grains, provide more hay. A slow feeder can keep hay available all day, which is great for gut health.

If your horse is losing weight, consult your vet about adding calories with energy-dense hay instead of grains.

Keep your eye on the Winter Weather!

Stay alert during weather changes. Ensure your horse has water, forage, and room to move when storms approach.

Avoid making sudden changes in their routine during these times. Keep an eye on your horse for signs of colic, like restlessness or changes in manure.

With these tips, your horse can enjoy a comfy and colic-free winter!
